What is a New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)?

  • New car assessment provides an opportunity for wider selection for consumers and to evaluate the safety of automobile through crash tests and such to induce the manufacturer to manufacture safe automobiles and disclosing its results to the consumers.
  • Overview

    The government evaluates the safety of automobiles through automobile crash tests and such and provides the information to consumers in order to induce manufacturers to produce safe automobiles and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has been executing the new car assessment and announcing its results since 1999 to reduce loss of human life. From 1999 until 2017, safety has been evaluated through frontal impact tests and such and its results were announced for 205 passenger vehicle models, 7 van models, and 2 small truck models. In 2023, 21 items including frontal impact safety, offset frontal impact safety, side impact safety, pole side impact safety, child impact safety, pedestrian safety, and accident prevention safety are being evaluated for 7 passenger vehicle models including 4 imported automobile models. This year we are planning a mid- to long-term plan for NCAP. You can check more details on safety evaluation results at NCAP website (www.kncap.org). The government plans to continue to reflect the consumer requirements in new car assessment and provide relevant information to contribute to advancement of Korean automobile industry and safety of its citizens.

Symbol mark

Basic symbol consists of two overlapping target marks used by NCAP which expresses higher level of concentration than traditional target mark to symbolize the intent of KNCAP to put forth twice the effort and care in testing process. Also, it is designed in 3D to express three-dimensional approach to vehicle performance testing and this symbolizes the [reliability] for KNCAP and [safety] for vehicles.

Yellow and black reminds the target mark representing NCAP but they are also colors symbolizing safety. Italicized font of KNCAP was designed to express speed.
